Sydney Hockey - Matty's Hope Round
Matthew Lam passed away two years ago on 29 July 2022 from a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer Diffuse Hemispheric Glioma H3 G34-mutant (G34-DHG).
Matt was an active member of our hockey community. Matt played and umpired in the Sydney Hockey competition. He also coached the junior hockey teams at his club and for various schools, assisted at his club's women's training sessions, umpired the Sydney North Women's Competition and worked at the hockey shop.
Matt's family has partnered with the Children's Cancer Institute (CCI). In February 2023 CCI launched a research project "Matty’s Hope" into G34-DHG; the first of its kind in Australia.
We are pleased to partner with Matt's family by naming the games held on the weekend of 3 and 4 August 2024 as "Matty's Hope Round" and invite you as part of the Sydney Hockey community to join us in supporting this cause.
The first Matty's Hope round in 2023 raised over $30,000, and we know we can do this again!
Your donation will help fund dedicated research to the previously under researched G34-DHG. Together as a community we can work towards helping find a cure for G34-DHG.

As a parent I cannot even begin to imagine the pain you go through. Life at times is so unjust and so unfair. I remember coaching against Matty, thinking to myself, this kid is going to be a real pain to coach against. You could see he was good, had great energy about him and was completely invested. Then I learnt that his dad was a goalie! A hockey family! No wonder the kid is soooo good already. I feel for you and your family Tomy.
