DWTS Adam Brand Takes a Can Can Attitude For Childhood Cancer Research (07/09)
9 July, 2009: Country music star, Adam Brand, is tapping into his inner groove and taking to the dance
floor to raise money for childhood cancer research.
A contestant on this season’s Dancing With The Stars, Adam has chosen Children’s Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA) as his nominated charity.
Adam’s choice of charity is a personal one. His nephew Harrison lost his battle with cancer when he was only two years old. Harrison was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that affects the nervous tissues connected to the spine.
“It’s really close to my heart so hopefully, we’re going to raise plenty of money,” Adam said.
Professor Michelle Haber AM, Executive Director CCIA explained that neuroblastoma was a particularly aggressive disease.
“Currently, a child diagnosed with neuroblastoma, like Harrison, has only around 50 per cent chance of survival,” Professor Haber explained.
Tumours can appear in the neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis, and symptoms include difficulty with breathing, poor kidney function and impaired eyesight.
“Without the support of people like Adam and the community we wouldn’t be able to continue our research into the causes, prevention, better treatments and ultimately a cure for childhood cancer,” Professor Haber said.
“CCIA is committed to continuing our vital research until all children with cancer can be guaranteed a future and their quality of life improved.
“We hope Adam does very well in the competition and we are behind him 100 per cent,” Professor Haber concluded.
