State and Commonwealth Health Ministers, Brad Hazzard and Greg Hunt, announce that a new, world-class Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be built on the Randwick Hospital Campus, as a new home for Children’s Cancer Institute, and also for an expanded Kid’s Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital.
Children’s Cancer Institute has gone through a very exciting period of growth and expansion over the past couple of years, as we have worked in partnership with our clinical colleagues at the Kids Cancer Centre, Sydney Children’s Hospital, to develop and deliver the Zero Childhood Cancer national child cancer precision medicine program, and to expand our portfolio of ground-breaking research capabilities by recruiting a number of outstanding new research leaders.
This morning it was announced jointly by State and Commonwealth Health Ministers, Brad Hazzard and Greg Hunt, that a new, world-class Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be built on the Randwick Hospital Campus, as a new home for Children’s Cancer Institute, and also for an expanded Kid’s Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital. This new Centre will be developed as a partnership involving Children’s Cancer Institute, the Kid’s Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital and the University of New South Wales, and will mean that over 500 researchers and clinicians, focussed on the challenge of curing children’s cancer, will be working side by side in the same Centre, delivering outstanding research and world-class clinical care.
The research to be undertaken in the new Centre will span the entire spectrum from laboratory research into treatment and prevention, through to research on the impact of cancer on families, and on the integration of new discoveries into improved models of care. This seamless integration of doctors and researchers will allow Children’s Cancer Institute to better utilise patient data from the bedside, to drive new research discoveries at the lab bench and to take these back to the bedside in real time.
This ground-breaking initiative will build on our 35 year partnership with Sydney Children’s Hospital to deliver innovative, translational research from the lab bench to the bedside as quickly as possible, resulting in improved outcomes for children with cancer.
This will be Australia’s first purpose-built Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre and will accelerate the implementation of new discoveries into standard of care for children with cancer, that will move us closer than ever towards achieving our vision of one day curing every child of cancer.
