Ms Vanessa Tyrrell joined Children's Cancer Institute in 2015, building on a distinguished career in diagnostic laboratory genetics. She is an Associate of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA), holds an MBA in general management, and is a Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA). Ms Tyrrell is a long-serving executive committee member of the HGSA contributing to many committees and working groups over the past 15 years, and currently holds the office of Vice President.
Ms Tyrrell has extensive experience in oncology, clinical, and prenatal diagnostic genetics service delivery in public and private sectors, laboratory management, accreditation, quality assurance, and leadership development. Since 2006, she has gained solid commercial experience in the global genomic and molecular biology industry; has managed genomics projects and policy development nationally for the RCPA, interacted with the Federal Department of Health on genomic projects, is a past member of the NHMRC’s Human Genetics Advisory Committee; and current member of the NSW OHMR Genomics Reference Group. This range of experiences has exposed her to laboratory, clinical service delivery, commercial, and policy challenges of the increasingly common translational nature and clinical applications of the rapidly emerging genomic technologies.
Ms Tyrrell has been appointed by Children’s Cancer Institute to drive the development and implementation of all research, operational, and logistic elements of the Zero Childhood Cancer personalised medicine program and co-ordination and integration of these with the lead clinical team based at the Sydney Children’s Hospital.
