Help protect children like
Kayne
from lifelong side effects

"I don’t want other children with cancer to struggle like Kayne struggles today. I want them to have a chance to survive and thrive without debilitating, lifelong side effects"

–Dani, Kayne's mum

A life saved, but changed forever

Just before he was two, Kayne was diagnosed with an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumour (ATRT), a very rare type of brain cancer. Kayne suffered through a gruelling 18 months of chemotherapy and multiple brain surgeries. Tragically, the very treatment that saved his life also left him with permanent brain damage.

Kayne's balance, motor skills, speech and hearing are affected. Now 11 years old, he can't chase after a soccer ball with his friends, and struggles to join in with their jokes.

Kayne is one of a staggering 70% of children cancer survivors who suffer lifelong side effects from their cancer treatment. Children like Kayne deserve more. We must find safer, better treatments for these children.

We have the researchers, the technology and a passionate team determined to make this happen. All we need now, is your support.

Only research will improve outcomes for children like Kayne

When children are treated for cancer, the primary challenge is to find treatments that will cure them. The next challenge is to find treatments that don’t leave them with devastating side effects.

If we can target only the cancer cells in a child’s body and leave the healthy cells untouched, we will reduce a child’s side effects.

Professor Maria Kavallaris AM and her team are pioneering work in 3D printing to advance the discovery of drugs, and harnessing nanotechnology to find new ways to deliver targeted drugs to specific tumour sites in a child’s body.

“We need to talk about side effects. I have seen the impact of current aggressive treatments on kids and their families. We can and we must do better."

– Professor Maria Kavallaris AM

Pioneering research using 3D printing and nanotechnology to find answers

When children are treated for cancer, the primary challenge is to find the treatments that will cure children like Kayne. The next challenge is to find treatments that don’t leave them with devastating side effects.

As a survivor of childhood cancer herself, Professor Maria Kavallaris has personal experience with side effects. It’s this experience that is powering her commitment to discovering what’s next in treatment methods for children with aggressive and high-risk cancer.

Please help us accelerate this groundbreaking research to help more children with cancer, as soon as we possibly can

Your work will be invaluable. I wish our daughter had benefitted from it when she had treatment in 1982-85.
