Great Northern Mongrel

By Trevor Brown

I'm fundraising for a great cause!

On the 24 July I'm doing a personal challenge, the "Great Northern Mongrel" a seriously insane continuous triathlon (8k Swim, 360k Bike, 84k Run) from Magnetic Island to Port Douglas. I hope to not only inspire others to challenge themselves but to raise some money for a great cause children's cancer.
It breaks my heart to hear the stories from people when I tell them the charity I’m supporting. We as adults can look back on our childhood with mixed emotions and see how those times have shaped our journey through life. As a child we look to the future with hopes and dreams on a journey to come… Cancer crushes those dreams..

My Updates

Taper Time

Tuesday 13th Jul

So now that I’m into the official taper phase of my training I thought I would share some “Great Northern Mongrel” interesting facts.

Mongrel

noun

  1. a dog of no definable type or breed

Great Northern

noun

  1. the beer Bowndog and Badge was drinking when coming up with event name.

Total Distance - of the Great Northern Mongrel – 452 Km

Time to complete GNM – Fingers crossed less than 30 hrs

Best sayings heard while training

1.       “I did it because I didn’t think I could” – Roy Matthews after doing 10 consecutive park runs.

2.       “I will not do a turn on the front as I will only get in your way” – Bec Woods on a bunch ride.

3.       “It will not matter too much if we go off course a bit on the swim” – Badge my paddler reviewing his effort on holding a straight course on Strava, my reply… “WTF”

Longest training ride – 300.22 Km

Longest training swim – 6.005 Km

Longest training run – 35.53 Km

Lowest moment – 5am on a freezing ride out to Woodstock at start of 300km training ride.

Most inspirational moment - 5am on freezing ride out to Woodstock at start of 300km training ride,  but doing with a bunch of mates who wanted to support me.

Most appreciative moment – Hot spuds at the top of Castle Hill from Pete.

Funniest moment – Bowen trail run creek crossing, the last step was a doozy for short people.

Most exhilarating moment – duelling with Wayne on bike at +53km/h after already riding 170km.

Most humbling moment – My Son’s mates being among the first to donate to my cause.

Biggest light bulb moment – Realising that when you tell your friends what you’re going to do, and they say “you got this” or “good on you” or “you will be amazing” you are still in your comfort zone. When they say “you are crazy” or “that’s insane” or “I don’t think you should” then you know you’re not only out of your comfort zone but way out of theirs. That’s where the magic happens 😊

Most anticipated moment – Me doing this adventure and it motivates even one of my friends to dream bigger and achieve something they never believed possible.

Browndog’s right ankle - has calcinated and nearly fully fused, has no meniscus in ankle joint and less than 10% flexibility. Running hurts and running uphill hurts a lot.

Dave Wharton - from Townsville Pain and Injury Clinic has been magnificent in keeping my body aligned and it top form to cope with the training demands I have been subjecting it to. Highly recommend him to keep you performing at your best.

Why Children’s Cancer – I have Been reasonably blessed with very little illness or disease in my family. The one thing that rips me apart is sick children and the distress suffered by their loved ones. Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to live life how they choose. Many children, through no fault of their own, with cancer will never get that opportunity to do crazy stuff like I do.

So please donate so they can … “Live Life, Love Life”… Browndog

2 weeks to go

Monday 12th Jul
“An unexpected knee problem. Strapped up by a paramedic at 66km which got me to 111km.  Sharp pain then … so I pulled the pin.  My first DNF. It has fuelled the fire”..... This was the message from my CEO after I asked how he went in the Brisbane Ultra Trail 100 miler on the weekend.

Out of that reply what I took away wasn't that he DNF but that the experience of his first 100miler has “fuelled the fire”. It's never about getting knocked down... s**t happens ...it's how you get up that counts.

His words and flashbacks to other great mates who have overcome enormous adversity has really given me a reality check this week. I realise that while I have never DNF an event my stubbornness and tenacity in the most part is from moments where I have shared in the heart break of my friends shortfalls and the sometimes questionable banter at their expense. This fuels my fire....

In saying that, my fire was well quenched today with my last really big training set. I did my longest swim every, with a 6k ocean swim with my trusty paddler Badge. He paddled for a number of swimmers today keeping us swimming straight, beating off any undesirable marine creatures and carrying our nutrition. Our very own uber eats of the sea. I have some great friends helping me on this journey and none more so that Mark & Lee Dowel. They along with my wife, Merina and my eldest son, Travis will be supporting me on my adventure.

Todays swim has given me some confidence as the swim is still my biggest worry. I just hope for good conditions on the day for the 8k crossing from Magnetic Island. I have also been travelling exceptionally well on the bike with some seriously crazy speeds on my 200k training ride last week. Running has seen me getting use to my trekking poles that really help on the longer runs and uphill sections.

I also managed to squeeze in the Sue Bell memorial tri at Saunders beach last weekend. Was great to get out and mingle as most of my training is done solo. The shorter distances of the tri really challenged me as most of my training is long and slow with a focus on endurance.

Well it's less than 2 weeks until show time donations to Children's cancer are still coming in. I have also set up a donation link directly with the Children's Cancer website for those that don't have Facebook or would prefer to donate directly with this great organisation.
