I am taking part in 86K for a Cure to help find a cure for childhood cancer. Please read my story ❤️‍🩹
Every month, 86 children are diagnosed with cancer. Â my names Darcie Rowe and this is my story.Â
On 11th of November 2014 my life changed, I was a typical 4 year old girl when my mum noticed that the right ride of my tummy was harder then the left, tests were done and my blood showed slightly elevated blood cells, I was sent straight to the Townsville hospital for further investigation. I was diagnosed with cancer and was sent immediately to Brisbane where my family were told I had wilms tumour, a type of kidney cancer. I went in for surgery as the tumour was growing rapidly and they didn’t want to waste any time starting treatment. A biopsy was done and it was found that the tumour had a necrotic centre, meaning my body had already fought the cancer. This type of cancer is typically formed when the baby is forming and presents at the age of about 2 years old. I was nearly five and I had been living with the tumour in my body that whole time since birth. The cancer was growing rapidly and the risk of it attaching and effecting other organs was high. I had weekly chemotherapy and checks to monitor the size of my tumour and on the 16th of December m, I had surgery to remove the tumour and my right kidney. Following this was 7 days of intensive radiation, followed by 5 months of chemotherapy. On the 1st of May 2015 I received my last dose of chemotherapy and two weeks last I was “no evidence of disease”. To this day I still go back for checks up but am happy and healthy as ever!Â
So I am conquering 86km for the 86 children who are diagnosed with cancer each month.
Together, we can help find a cure for childhood cancer and create safer, more effective treatments.
We are so proud of you, Darcie! You are our little hero đź’›
